Jeffery T. Barnett
Jeffery T. Barnett has extensive experience in civil litigation with a particular emphasis on healthcare-related matters. Throughout his career, he has represented hospitals, physicians, healthcare systems, and other providers in professional liability claims and complex litigation. His practice includes matters involving medical malpractice defense, product liability, healthcare regulatory issues, credentialing and licensing, HIPAA compliance, and Certificate of Need proceedings. Mr. Barnett advises individuals and organizations across Kentucky, including hospitals, academic medical centers, long-term care facilities, and physician practice groups.
Mr. Barnett has received significant professional recognition for his work in healthcare and litigation. He holds an AV® Preeminent™ Peer Review Rating from Martindale-Hubbell®, the highest rating for professional excellence and ethical standards. He has also been selected for inclusion in The Best Lawyers in America®, a distinction based on rigorous peer review by fellow attorneys. In 2007, Mr. Barnett was appointed by the Governor of Kentucky to serve as a Special Justice on the Kentucky Supreme Court.
Earlier in his career, Mr. Barnett served in leadership roles within Kentucky’s Cabinet for Health and Family Services, where he was appointed Deputy General Counsel and Deputy Executive Director of the Office of Health Policy. In those roles, he was responsible for a variety of healthcare regulatory matters, including modifications to the State Health Plan and the administration of Kentucky’s Certificate of Need process.
Mr. Barnett earned his Bachelor of Arts in History and Government from Centre College and his Juris Doctor, cum laude, from the University of Louisville School of Law. While in law school, he was a member of the Brandeis Honor Society, the Journal of Family Law, and the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society.
In addition to his legal practice, Mr. Barnett is a frequent lecturer and guest speaker on healthcare law and litigation topics throughout Kentucky. He has presented on issues such as medical malpractice litigation and the analysis and use of medical records. He previously served as a faculty member for the New Lawyers Seminars sponsored by the Kentucky Bar Association, which are attended by newly admitted members of the Kentucky Bar. He has also authored numerous articles on healthcare law and related legal topics.
Mr. Barnett is admitted to practice before all courts in Kentucky as well as the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit and the United States District Courts for the Eastern and Western Districts of Kentucky. He is a member of the Fayette County Bar Association, the Kentucky Bar Association, and the American Bar Association, as well as professional organizations including the Academy of Trial Lawyers of America and Kentucky Defense Counsel, Inc.
Mr. Barnett is also a certified mediator and frequently mediates disputes involving healthcare matters, commercial litigation, and other complex business issues.
